10 - A bit of a tongue twister…
Peter Pepper Chili Peppers make a great conversation point in the garden. They have a distinct phallic shape, grow to around 3-4 inches long and 1-1.5 inches wide. They are originally from Texas and Louisiana and are bright red in colour.
9 - When life gives you lemons…
This is a very odd shaped citrus fruit, which is very popular in China and Japan due it’s strong fragrance. Often used as perfume, the mild tasting fruit is called Buddha’s fingers. There is no juice or pulp in the fruit, and is often used to make candles, eaten as dessert or used in alcohal.
For religious purposes, the many fingers on the hand represents happiness and long life – and the fruit is often placed on tables or given as offerings at temple altars.
8 - Mother nature having a little fun..
This is the Fleeceflower’s Roots, and they look like little humans! They don’t all look like this, but many of them do. Used in Chinese traditional medicine for many diferent ailments and treatments. It has a sweet taste, and is often mixed with black soybean juice. Thanks doc.
7 - Don’t be afraid…
These are totally harmless. They are the seedpods of the snapdragon – stunning when alive, but a bit macabre when the flower has died. It resembles a skull or someone screaming in absolute agony. These are quite common in many household gardens. I would love to discover these in my garden, wouldn’t you?
6 - From Skulls to Holy Ghosts…
This is the Holy Ghost Orchid or the Dove, and they are really the sweetest things. It looks like a tiny dove is sitting right in the middle of the orchid. Apparently these orchids smell like beer, and is often used in Chinese medicine to treat bad skin.
5 - How would you like your insects?
These carnivorous plants are called Sundews. They trap insects and digest them for the extra nutrients. The leaves are covered with shiny sticky tentacles, which glue the insect to the plant. The tentacles or leaves wrap around the insect which suffocates it and then through its enzymes digests the insect.
4 - All creatures great and small…
This is a giant Pitcher plant, which forms part of a species that hosts a variety of 240 different types of pitcher plants. Some being super tiny and some being really massive. Inside the pitcher plant is digestive liquid, with the biggest one being able to hold half a gallon.
In 2007 one was discovered in the Philippines that was so big that it could slowly consume a rat or a bird. They dubbed it the Venus Rat Trap!
3 - Hell was full…
So this mushroom came back to earth! It’s been referred to as the Devils own – these are called Stinkhorns. They don’t look particularly interesting, but just wait… The stink that these guys emanate is a mixture of sewerage, faeces, decomposing flesh and whatever other ghastly smell you can think of.
They release a sticky substance called Gleba which flies also love, so on top of the stink – welcome the flies! The flies sit on the mushroom, carrying their nastiness along with them wherever they head off to next – probably your lunch!
2 - Just monkeying around…
This is the Monkey Orchid, and there are so many different kinds – that we get to view a whole range of different looking monkeys. It’s also known as Dracula Simia because the sepals look like Draculas fangs. They are found Ecuador, and they smell like oranges.
1 - Can I borrow a kiss?
What a beautiful pair of red lips – commonly known as Hooker’s Lips – this plant is common in the rainforests of South American countries. It didn’t always look like this, and evolved to attract more birds and butterflies. They are also only kissable lips for a short period of time before the plants flowers are revealed.
