Bittaker and Norris hatched a plan to rape and kill local girls. Bittaker bought a 1977 GMC cargo van, which they came to call "Murder Mack", because it had no side windows in the back and a large passenger side sliding door. From February to June 1979, they gave their plan a test run. They drove along the Pacific Coast Highway, stopped at beaches, talked to girls and took their pictures. When the pair was arrested, police found close to 500 pictures among Bittaker's possessions.

On June 24, 1979, they claimed their first victim, 16-year-old Cindy Schaeffer. They picked her up near Redondo Beach, Norris forcing her into the van. He duct taped her mouth and bound her arms and legs. Bittaker drove the van to a fire road on San Gabriel Mountains out of sight of the highway. Both men raped the girl, and then Bittaker wrapped a straightened wire coat hanger around her neck. He tightened the wire with vise-grip pliers, strangling her to death. They wrapped her body in a plastic shower curtain and dumped it in a nearby canyon.

They picked up 18-year-old Andrea Hall hitchhiking on July 8. Norris hid in the back of the van and Bittaker talked her into the van. After she had gotten in Bittaker offered her a drink from a cooler in the back. When she went to the cooler Norris jumped her, bound her arms and legs, and taped her mouth shut. They took her to the fire road and raped her several times. Bittaker dragged her from the van, and Norris left to get beer. When he returned, Hall was gone, and Bittaker was looking at Polaroid pictures of her. He had stabbed her with an ice pick in both ears and strangled her. He threw her body over a cliff.

On September 3, while driving near Hermosa Beach, the pair spotted two girls on a bus stop bench and offered them a ride. Jackie Gilliam, 15, and Leah Lamp, 13, accepted their offer. The girls became suspicious when Bittaker parked the van near a suburban tennis court. Lamp went for the back door and Norris hit her in the head with a bat. A short scuffle broke out, but with Bittaker's help Norris subdued the teens and bound them both. Bittaker then drove them to the fire road. They kept the girls alive for two days, raping and torturing them the whole time with a wire hanger and pliers. They even made an audio recording of the events. Eventually Bittaker stabbed Gilliam in both ears with an ice pick. When she didn't succumb to her injuries, both men took turns strangling her until she died. Bittaker then strangled Lamp while Norris hit her in the head with a sledgehammer seven times. They dumped the bodies over a cliff, the ice pick still in Gilliam's head.

They kidnapped Shirley Sanders on September 30, macing her and forcing her into the van. Both raped her, but she escaped. Police had showed her pictures of the men and she had identified the men as Lawrence and Roy.

They kidnapped 16-year-old Lynette Ledford on October 31, raping her and torturing her, while driving around Los Angeles instead of heading to their usual mountain spot. Bittaker stabbed the young girl several times and also tortured her with the pliers. During her torture, her screams and pleas were tape-recorded as Bittaker repeatedly beat her elbows with a sledgehammer, all the time demanding that she not stop screaming; he eventually strangled her with a wire hanger, using the pliers to twist a cinching loop around her throat. Instead of tossing her body over a cliff, they left it on a random lawn in Hermosa Beach to see the local reaction in the newspaper. The body was found the next day and caused quite a stir, being only days since the arrest of "Hillside Strangler" Angelo Buono.

Glen Rogers, The Cross-Country Killer - The Casanova Killer : Serial killer Documentary

A charming, handsome and volatile individual, Glen was the focus of an all-points national manhunt after a cross-country rampage that left at least four women dead in four separate states. The consummate ladies man, Glen liked to pick up blond and redheaded women in bars and ask them for a ride home. Then he would try to spend the night with them. All those charmed by his redneck good looks are now stretched out in the morgue. The killings came usually as a drunken afterthought. Glen is an example of a spree killer who, unlike serial killers, does not have cooling off periods between kills. His killings were the consequence of impromptu bursts of rage.

His first victim is believed to be a former house mate whose corpse was found in January 1993 under a pile of furniture in an abandoned house owned by the Rogers family. His next known kill was a woman he met at a bar in Van Nuys, California. On September, 1995, she was found raped and strangled inside her burning pickup truck. The third victim, another barfly, was found stabbed to death in her bathtub in Jackson, Mississippi on November 3. Yet another woman's body was found in a bathtub in Tampa, Florida on November 5. His last victim was found stabbed to death in her bedroom on November 11 in Bossier City, Louisiana.

"He's getting to be like one of your serial killers," said a Hamilton, Ohio, police detective. Rogers, a construction worker, grew up in Hamilton where he had frequent run-ins with the law. Once he poked a lit blowtorch through the peephole of his front door when police came in response to a domestic violence call. Authorities believe that he might be linked to as many as twelve deaths. In California, Rogers is a suspect in four unsolved killings in Ontario and Port Hueneme. Two days before his arrest he told his sister that he was responsible for more than 70 deaths. Later he recanted the number and said he was merely joking. According to authorities Glen was being cooperative during a six-hour interview after his arrest on November 13.

On May 7, 1997 Glen was convicted of murder in a Tampa court for killing a woman he had met in a bar. The jury took eight hours to find him guilty of the murder of Tina Marie Cribbs and the next day, just three hours to recommend the death penalty. After the Tampa trial, Rogers faces three more trials in separate states. However, none of these states have filled charges yet.

Rogers and the victim met at a bar where Ms. Cribbs was waiting for her mother, Mrs. Mary Dicke. Mrs. Dicke was late, and Ms. Cribbs left a beer at the bar and asked friends to tell her mother she would be back shortly. She drove Rogers to a motel in Tampa and the two went inside and had sex. In a fit of rage the ex-carnival worker stabbed Ms. Cribbs twice, twisting the knife as he pulled it out from eight- and nine-inch wounds in her chest and buttocks before leaving her to a slow, agonizing death in a motel bathtub.

During the seven-day trial the defense maintained that Rogers wasn't the murderer. Furthermore Hamilton, Ohio Police Sgt. Tom Kilgore testified that Rogers had worked for the department as a paid undercover narcotics informant, making hundreds of cases over the years without ever breaking his cover. In his closing argument, defense attorney Nick Sinardi said the state rushed to judgment. "Glen Rogers is a thief, not a murderer." A thief, it seems, with a nasty habit of leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.

On July 11, 1997, Glen was sentenced to Florida's temperamental "Old Sparky" for the stabbing death of Tina Marie Cribbs. Glen's brother Claude, a real estate agent from Palm Springs, California, said after the sentencing: "If you watch my brother -- he's been sitting watching a movie. I don't think reality has set in." Glen, through his lawyer, is still claiming he is innocent.

James Duckett, The Sick Killer Cop On Death Row : Killer Documentary

James Duckett was the only police officer on patrol on the night of 05/11/87 in the city of Mascotte, Florida.

Around 10:00 p.m., eleven-year-old Teresa McAbee walked to a convenience store to purchase a pencil and, after leaving the store, stopped to talk to a sixteen-year-old boy outside the store.

Duckett arrived at the convenience store shortly afterward and, after asking the store clerk the age of McAbee, he approached McAbee and the boy. After a brief conversation, Duckett told McAbee to go home, leaving the boy to wait for his uncle. When the boy’s uncle arrived, the boy and his uncle witnessed McAbee getting into the passenger side of Duckett’s patrol car.

At 11:00 p.m., McAbee’s mother walked to the convenience store, looking for her daughter. The store clerk told the mother that McAbee had left with Duckett and was probably at the Mascotte police station.

When no one was found at the Mascotte police station, the mother drove to nearby Groveland police station, where she reported her daughter missing. The Groveland police officer contacted a Mascotte police officer, and Duckett arrived at the Groveland police station within twenty minutes. Duckett used a picture of McAbee to make a flyer that he said he would post at convenience stores in the area, however, he failed to do so.

The store clerk reported that the police drove by the store every hour, but she reported that Duckett came by at 9:30 p.m. but did not return for a few hours. Additionally, Duckett made no radio calls between 9:50 p.m. and 12:10 a.m.

The next morning McAbee’s body was found in a lake less than one mile from the convenience store where she was last seen. Medical testimony demonstrated that she was sexually assaulted while alive and then drowned. Blood and a pubic hair, later identified as probable matches to Duckett, were found in her underpants and semen was found on her jeans.

Distinct tire tracks found at the scene were matched to the tires found on the Mascotte Police Department patrol cars. Duckett’s and McAbee’s fingerprints were found on the hood of the car, indicating that she was sitting backwards on the hood of the car.

At trial, three girls between the ages of seventeen and nineteen testified that in the six months prior to the murder, Duckett had given rides to each of them and had made sexual advances. One of the girls testified that she participated in sexual acts with Duckett.

William Horncy, The Murder Of Amarjit Chohan And His Family : Crime Documentary

William Horncy (born 1954) is a British murderer who achieved notoriety in 2005 when he was convicted of murdering millionaire Amarjit Chohan as well as Chohan's wife, mother-in-law and two sons. The bodies of Chohan's two sons were never found.

Horncy was sentenced to life imprisonment and on 23 February 2008 The Times reported that he was among 50 prisoners who were issued with whole life tariffs and are unlikely ever to be released.

Two men have been found guilty of murdering a millionaire and his family in order to take over his business.

The bodies of Amarjit Chohan, his wife and her mother, from west London, were washed up on the south coast in 2003. Their two children have not been found.

Career criminal Kenneth Regan, 54, of Wiltshire, and his accomplice William Horncy, 51, of Dorset, were convicted of murdering all three generations.

Peter Rees was convicted of Mr Chohan's murder but cleared of the other four.

The 38-year-old, from Portsmouth, Hants, was also convicted of assisting an offender following the eight-month trial.

Indian-born Mr Chohan, his 25-year-old wife Nancy, their two young sons, Devinder and Ravinder, and Mrs Chohan's mother, Charanjit Kaur, 51, disappeared from their Hounslow home in February 2003.

Regan, a convicted drug dealer and police informant, planned to take over Mr Chohan's successful CIBA freight company to use it as a front for importing drugs.

He wanted to make people think the 46-year-old, who was known as a "chancer" and had been to prison for tax evasion, had given up his business and gone abroad, the trial was told.

So he lured Mr Chohan to Stonehenge, Wiltshire, held him against his will for several days, gagged him and forced him to sign over his company before murdering him.

The jury, which took 13 days to come to its verdict, was told how the plan would have worked had it not been for Mrs Chohan's brother, Onkar Verma, in New Zealand.

He refused to accept that his mother, his sister and her family would have just vanished.

As police inquiries were about to turn to a farm in Tiverton, Devon, where the defendants had buried the family, the men returned to the farm to dig up the bodies.

The trial heard that on Easter Sunday 2003 the bodies were taken out to sea and dumped.

Two days later, Mr Chohan's body was found floating in the water near Bournemouth pier. His wife's body was found in the same area that July and Mrs Kaur was found in November in a bay off the Isle of Wight.

Paul Mendelle, defending Regan, said he "would have had to be desperate beyond belief to slaughter an entire family for the sake of a business".

After the conviction his legal team maintained he was innocent and was planning to appeal.

Police still do not know how Mr Chohan died and have said they will be asking the men to tell them where to find the bodies of two-month old Ravinder and 18-month-old Devinder.

Det Ch Insp Dave Little, who led the investigation, said it was a crime "utterly beyond the comprehension of decent society".

"A young family, a new family, was entirely wiped out at the hands of these murderous men, in an attempt to line their own pockets," he said.

A Chohan family friend, Suresh Grover, read out a statement on behalf of Mr Verma saying: "The last two years have been a living nightmare.

"The deliberate, premeditated slaughter of my innocent family is akin to me being given a life sentence - a life with no laughter, no happiness and no joy."

The murder trial, which cost more than £10m, is thought to be the longest in the history of the Metropolitan Police and of the Old Bailey.

Darlie Routier, Woman On Death Row

Darlie Lynn Routier (born January 4, 1970) is an American woman from Rowlett, Texas, who was convicted of murdering her young son Damon, and is currently on death row awaiting execution by lethal injection. Two of her three children, Damon and Devon, were stabbed to death in the family's home on June 6, 1996. Routier was accused of killing both children but was only prosecuted for the murder of Damon, the younger of the two murdered boys.

The prosecution's contention was that Darlie Routier murdered her sons because of the family's financial difficulties. She was a full-time homemaker but her husband Darin, a small business owner, earned a relatively high income. This was later referred to as "living large" by her husband Darin Routier in an interview a few days after the deaths with Joe Munoz of KXAS Channel 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth. The family lived in a two-story home in a middle-class neighborhood, drove a mid-sized SUV, owned a used Jaguar automobile and a used boat.

Prosecutors described Routier as a pampered and materialistic woman with substantial debt, plummeting credit ratings, and little money in the bank who feared that her middle class lifestyle was about to end.

Darlie Routier testified that an intruder killed her children but police found inconsistencies between her report and the crime scene evidence.

During the 911 call, Routier can be heard saying that she'd found a knife on the floor. The 911 operator, thinking that Routier was speaking to her, told her not to touch anything, to which Routier responded that she had already touched it and picked it up and later said, "We could have gotten the prints, maybe."

Although Dr. Alejandro Santos and Dr. Patrick Dillawn referred to Routier's wounds as superficial, her neck wound came within two millimeters of her carotid artery. Blood spatter expert Tom Bevel testified that cast-off blood found on the back of Routier's nightshirt indicated that she had raised the knife over her head as she withdrew it from each boy to stab again.

Routier's bloody footprints were found underneath a vacuum cleaner and broken glass, indicating those items had been placed there after she went through the kitchen instead of before, as she'd claimed. In spite of broken glass being in the path of her bloody footprints, Routier had no corresponding injuries to her feet.

Newscasts appeared of Darlie Routier and other family members holding a birthday party at the children's grave to celebrate posthumously Devon's 7th birthday, just eight days after the murders. Routier, smiling and laughing, appeared jovial as she sprayed Silly String on the graves in celebration of Devon's birthday.

Four days later, Routier was charged with capital murder.

Routier was ultimately convicted of murdering the younger of her two sons, and was sentenced to death by lethal injection. Prosecutors did not try Routier for the death of her older son, holding his murder in reserve in the event she was acquitted in the first murder trial or her conviction was overturned on appeal, as there is no statute of limitations on any murder charge in Texas. Routier's defense attorney, Douglas Mulder, was the prosecutor responsible for the wrongful conviction and subsequent death penalty (both since overturned) of Randall Adams in 1977. The Adams case is profiled in the documentary The Thin Blue Line.

In June 2011 Darin Routier filed for divorce, having remained married to Routier after the murder of their sons. Darin Routier stated that the decision to divorce was mutual and "very difficult," and that he still believes his wife is innocent. He went on to say that they decided on the divorce to move on from the "limbo" they've been in since her arrest and conviction.

Routier's family maintains a website which proclaims her innocence and a new site has been created by Routier's supporters to present their views and claims of her innocence.

Defense attorneys allege that errors were made during her trial and the investigation of the murders, especially at the crime scene. They also claim that there is significant exculpatory evidence which was improperly excluded, while questionable prosecution evidence was improperly allowed into evidence. Despite these claims, Routier's appeals have continually failed.

Routier's appeals have been remanded to the state level for improved DNA testing. Once all state-level testing has been completed, the testing ordered by the federal courts will begin. Routier remains incarcerated on death row located in Gatesville, Texas at the Mountain View Unit of the Texas Department Of Criminal Justice. She is assigned Department of Criminal Justice Identification Number 00999220.

Francis Michael Fahey : Serial Killer Documentary

OFFICIALLY no one will ever know why Francis Michael Fahey butchered two Brisbane prostitutes, but his wife has no doubts it is linked to Fahey's work as an ambulance officer.

In the Supreme Court in Brisbane yesterday, Fahey was sentenced to two life sentences for the murders of Jasmin Crathern and Julie Louise McColl.

He will have to serve 25 years in jail before he can apply for parole, but the court was told that because of Fahey's health, he was likely to die in jail.

Fahey picked up the women in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley area and then drove them to secluded places where he killed them.

Outside court Fahey's wife Beth said she hoped for the victims' families' sake the sentence would give them some closure.

She said she believed anti-depressant medication Fahey was taking at the time, because of stress from work as an ambulance officer, could have caused his behaviour.

She said her husband's character changed and his efforts to get help were ignored by officials.

"He was singing out for help and wasn't getting it. I saw him go from a vibrant man who loved his work to a cowering and crying person," she said.

The resumed sentence hearing yesterday was delayed after the government medical officer was called to examine Fahey and his ability to comprehend the hearing.

After Fahey was cleared to continue, Crown prosecutor Peter Feeney withdrew an application to have Fahey sentenced to an indefinite term. The decision came after medical advice on Fahey's health and observations made on indefinite sentencing by the High Court in a recent case involving Darling Downs rapist Jason Buckley.

Mr Feeney said the murders were brutal and must have been terrifying for the victims.

"Fahey must have derived so much pleasure from the first killing that it overwhelmed any qualms about the second," he said.

Barrister Rick Taylor, for Fahey, said

His client was diagnosed with an adjustment disorder, had a heart attack in 1999 and also had problems with his hearing in one ear. He said Fahey had no previous criminal convictions, a good work history and there was no explanation for the offences.

Justice White said it was not possible for the court to speculate whether Fahey's actions were a result of the "horrors" he had witnessed as an ambulance officer.

Justice White sentenced Fahey to two life sentences, with a minimum 25 years to be served before he would be eligible to apply for parole.

Outside court, McColl's father Tom Annas had nothing to say about the sentence. However, investigating lead officer Superintendent Mike Condon said the family was satisfied with the result.

Last September, Fahey, of Narangba north of Brisbane, was convicted of the killings by a jury which deliberated for four hours. The two-week trial was told Fahey had murdered Crathern at Hendra on August 8, 2002, and McColl at Bald Hills on February 26, 2003.

Fahey was linked to the murders by unique tyre and boot prints, DNA from shoes, his car and on a military bayonet found at his house, as well as semen on Crathern's shirt.

Susan Smith, The Child Killer : Crime Documentary

Susan Smith was born September 26, 1971 in Union, South Carolina. Smith's childhood was quite painful, following her parents' divorce, her father committed suicide. On October 25, 1994, Smith claimed to have been carjacked by an African-American man, with her boys in the car. She later confessed to drowning them and was sentenced to life.

Murderer. Born Susan Leigh Vaughan on September 26, 1971 in Union, South Carolina. Susan Smith had a troubled upbringing; her parents?? relationship was often violent and soon after their divorce, her father committed suicide. Her mother quickly remarried a man who sexually abused Susan.

On October 25, 1994, Smith contacted the police saying she had been carjacked by an African-American man who fled with her two young sons in the car. After she made emotional pleas on television for the safe return of her children, the incident gained media attention and sympathy from around the world. However, nine days later, Smith admitted that she had pushed her car into nearby John D. Long Lake, drowning her sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, who were strapped into their car seats inside.

Contempt for Smith was overwhelming, not only because of the racial tension ignited for the false accusation of a black man, but because her alleged motive was to get rid of her children in order to carry on a relationship with a wealthy man who wasn??t interested in a woman with sons.

During her trial, Smith??s stepfather, Republican Party and Christian Coalition leader Beverly Russell, testified that he had sexually molested Susan when she was a teenager and again in the months leading up to her drowning the boys. She was spared the death penalty and sentenced to life in prison. Susan Smith is serving her sentence at Leath Correctional Institution in South Carolina and will be eligible for parole in 2024, after serving a minimum of thirty years.

Edmund Kemper, The Co-ed Killer : Serial Killer Documentary

Edmund Emil Kemper III , also known as The Co-ed Killer, is an American serial killer who was active in the early 1970s.

He started his criminal life as a teenager by shooting both his grandparents while staying on their 17-acre ranch in North Fork, California, a crime for which he was incarcerated.

Kemper later killed and dismembered six female hitchhikers in the Santa Cruz, California, area. He then murdered his mother and one of her friends before turning himself in to the authorities.

Kemper was born in Burbank, California, to Clarnell Stage and Edmund Emil Kemper Jr. He was very intelligent with an IQ of 136, however, he displayed sociopathic behavior from a young age: he tortured and killed animals, acted out bizarre sexual rituals with his sisters' dolls and once said that, in order to kiss a teacher he had a crush on, he would have to kill her. Worsening the situation was Kemper's mother, who constantly berated and humiliated her son and often made him sleep in a locked basement due to a fear that he would molest his sisters. Kemper's mother Clarnell apparently suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder which resulted in her rages and abuse against her son.

On August 27, 1964, Kemper shot his grandmother while she sat at the kitchen table putting the finishing touches on her latest children's book. When his grandfather came home from grocery shopping, Kemper shot him as well. Then he called his mother, who urged him to call the police. When questioned, he said that he "just wanted to see what it felt like to kill Grandma", and that he killed his grandfather because he knew he would be angry at him for what he had done to his grandmother. Kemper was just 15 at the time.

Kemper was committed to Atascadero State Hospital where he befriended his psychologist and even became his assistant. He was intelligent enough to gain the trust of the doctor to the extent of being allowed access to prisoners' tests. With the knowledge he gained from his "apprenticeship" he eventually was able to impress his doctor at the hospital enough to let him go.

He was released into his mother's care in Santa Cruz, California, against the wishes of several doctors at the hospital. Kemper later demonstrated further to the psychologists that he was well—and not only managed to convince the doctors he was reformed, but to have his juvenile records sealed forever as well.

James Debardeleben -The Mall Passer : Serial Killer Documentary

James Mitchell "Mike" DeBardeleben is a convicted rapist and counterfeiter, who has been in prison since the 1980s. He was infamously known as the "mall passer" by agents as he was being heavily sought for counterfeiting. After his arrest for counterfeiting, he was found to have committed much more serious sex crimes. He was not brought to trial for any murders, though two homicide cases were investigated by agents, and he remains a suspect in several more.

DeBardeleben was the second of three children. He had a younger brother named Ralph and a younger sister whose identity is not publicly known. By the time he was an adult he had grown to stand six feet tall. In 1945, when James was only five years old his family moved to Austin, Texas. His father who was serving in the U.S. Navy was then shipped out to the South Pacific for nine months. In 1949, his family moved to Kentucky for a short while before relocating to Frankfurt, Germany but after a year his family moved again.

In 1956, at the age of sixteen it is reported that Michael first physically assaulted his mother, it is unknown what sparked this violent encounter. On September 8 that year, at the age of sixteen, he purchased two handguns and ammunition with a friend. Later that month he was arrested and convicted for his first felony, possessing a concealed firearm. This arrest was the first of many that followed including arrests for sodomy, attempted murder and kidnapping.

In the Spring of 1957 he was expelled from Peter Schuyler High School and did not seek to pursue any formal education. In October that year, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at the Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Only after a year of being in the air force he was court-martialed for disorderly behavior and was sentenced to spend two months in the base stockade and have his wages forfeited.

In 1958 he was ordered by the Air Force to visit a psychiatrist for counseling after he was pronounced AWOL several times. At the age of eighteen he was discharged from the air force and moved to Fort Worth, Texas with relatives of the family.

In 1959 he attempted school again, enrolling in R.L. Paschal High School, but after three months was expelled. In August that year, he married his first wife, Linda Weir, but three weeks later separated from her. Also that month, he was arrested for attempted robbery with an accomplice, quickly followed two weeks later by his involvement in a string of auto theft, and was sentenced to five years probation. In October with an unknown woman, he fathered a premature daughter who was a stillborn.

He later met Charlotte Weber who was seventeen at the time he started courting her. In March of 1960 he impregnated Charlotte and on June 9 the same year, married her. On December 12, 1960 he successfully fathered a daughter, Bethene. Afterward Charlotte became pregnant again with another child but was forced by Michael to give it up for adoption. In August of 1961, his brother Ralph committed suicide for unknown reasons.

Hannah Hill, A Teenage Murder Mystery : Crime Documentary

In 1999, the body of the not quite 19 year old Hannah Hill was found stuffed in the trunk of her car. She had been beaten and appeared to have been raped.

Her boyfriend, who was said to have physically abused her, was quickly ruled out, and another suspect came to light, Denny Ross. The evidence against him appeared compelling, and because the crime was committed in Akron, Ohio, this was a capital case.

Compelling it may have appeared, but the defense did more than nibble at the evidence. The police investigation came in for a great deal of criticism, but much of this appears to have been wisdom in hindsight. Although Hannah had had sex shortly before she died, there was no evidence of forcible rape. At the end of the prosecution case, the defense rested without calling a single witness, which was a bold decision, and one that might have paid off but for an extraordinary development.

During their deliberations, one juror said something to another which indicated that he had ignored the judge's instructions and had read about the case in the press. This second juror – from whom we hear – reported this to the foreman, and the judge was given the awkward decision of ruling on a mistrial, which she did, even though Ross wanted to proceed in the knowledge that at least one juror believed him to be guilty. The jury had already ruled out the capital murder charge, and Ross would probably have been convicted of manslaughter, if of anything at all.

The documentary ends with the announcement that a retrial of Ross would constitute double jeopardy, and the belief of Hannah's friends and family that the murderer of their loved one had escaped on a technicality.

Later though there were more extraordinary developments. The prosecution appealed against the double jeopardy ruling, and in the meantime Ross, freed on bond, went on to rape and savagely beat another woman. Then it was ruled that he could be retried for the Hill murder, of which he was duly convicted and given a sentence of 19 years to life in addition to the sentence he received for the rape and assault.

To add further grief to Hannah's family, her brother was found dead in his home in June of last year; this time there was no suggestion of foul play.

Joseph Edward Duncan III : Serial Killer Documentary

Joseph Edward Duncan III (born February 25, 1963) is an American convicted serial killer and sex offender who is currently serving multiple concurrent death sentences and life sentences in conjunction with the 2005 kidnapping and murders of members of the Groene family of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

He has also been convicted and scheduled to be sentenced to an additional life sentence for the 1997 kidnapping and murder of Anthony Martinez of Beaumont, California, and has confessed but not been charged with the 1996 murder of two girls in Seattle, Washington.

Born in Tacoma, Washington, Duncan's lengthy criminal history dates to when he was 15 years old. In 1980, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a boy in Tacoma and as a result has spent most of his adult life in prison. He was paroled in 1994 but was returned to prison in 1997 for violating the terms of his parole.

In May 2005, Kootenai County, Idaho authorities discovered the bodies of Brenda Groene, her boyfriend, and her 13-year-old son in the family home near Coeur d'Alene. Authorities also noted that Groene's two other children were missing: Shasta, 8, and Dylan, 9. After an intense search for the two children, Shasta was found alive with Duncan at a restaurant in Coeur d'Alene nearly seven weeks later, and Duncan was arrested in conjunction with her kidnapping. Dylan's remains were found days later in a remote area near St. Regis, Montana. Duncan was subsequently charged with murdering Dylan as well as the three victims at the Coeur d'Alene home.

During his incarceration, authorities connected Duncan with the long unsolved murders of Anthony Martinez in California and two girls in Seattle, all of which occurred during Duncan's parole from 1994–1997. Of those murders, Duncan has only been charged in the California case. In all, Duncan has been convicted in the state of Idaho for kidnapping and murdering the three victims in Coeur d'Alene, for which he was given six life sentences; in federal court for kidnapping Shasta and Dylan Groene and murdering Dylan, for which he was given three death sentences; and in the state of California for kidnapping and murdering Martinez, for which he is scheduled to be given another life sentence.

The Murder of Mitchell and Judith Bell : Crime Documentary

Daniel Colwell shot and killed two people in the Americus WalMart parking lot six years ago.

He randomly killed Mitchell and Judith Bell so he would be sentenced to die. For years, Daniel Colwell had a death wish, but was afraid to committ suicide. He apparently overcame that fear late Sunday night.

The 41-year old Colwell was found hanging in his cell on death row at the Jackson State Prison. Prison officials say he apparently hanged himself with a sheet.

Colwell had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and manic depressive. He had tried suicide several times and finally, in a desperate attempt to die in the electric chair, he gunned down the Bells, then surrendered to police.

What followed was one of the strangest sentencing trials in South Georgia history.

"My lawyers do not represent me," he said to the court. "It's too bad that me and death are best friends.”

Daniel Morris Colwell was not your typical killer. He didn't kill out of anger, for money, or even for some sick thrill. He intentionally murdered with one goal in mind; to die at the hands of the state. "I, Daniel Colwell, deserve the death penalty.”

Moments after shooting Mitchell and Judith Bell in July 1996, Colwell drove to the police station. Commander Nelson Brown says "He walked inside, summoned dispatch, told the dispatcher, 'I'm the person you're looking for killing two people at Wal-Mart.'"

Colwell's attorney wanted him to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, but he refused, and plead guilty. Then, at his sentencing trial last year, he even threatened the jurors. "For those who might want me to see me suffer by making me suffer for the rest of my life in prison, how do you know, that I will not break out of prison and then torture your loved ones?"

Daniel Colwell was one of 14 children, from a hard working, God-fearing, religious family, well known and well respected throughout Americus.

And Daniel was the family star. He won a college football scholarship and at 6-1, 225 pounds, he was even a pro prospect. To his younger brother Steven, Daniel was a hero.

"He loved rising to the occasion and making the big play. He was an exciting type football player," said brother Steven.

But his promising football career came to an abrupt end in 1983 when he walked off the field before his college team's final game. His family says it was the first sign of his mental illness.

It's the mental illness his lawyers point to as the reason for his bizarre trial where Colwell sang: "Babe I'm leaving, I must be on my way. The time is drawing near. Babe I love you."

The Murder of Sheila Bellush : Serial Killer Documentary

Sheila Bellush was a mother of six who was murdered on November 7, 1997 by a hired gunman named Joey Del Toro, on the orders of her ex-husband, Allen Blackthorne. Blackthorne, who had stalked Bellush since their divorce in 1987, allegedly wanted custody of their two children.

Blackthorne was unhappy with his divorce from Sheila, and began to harass her after she won custody of their children. When the Bellush family moved to Florida he tracked her down using a private investigator and decided to hire a hoodlum to beat her up. A golfing buddy, Daniel Alex Rocha, a minor criminal, seemed the best bet to set his plan in motion, and Blackthorne asked Rocha to help him. Rocha was allegedly told by Blackthorne that Sheila was abusing their two children, Stevie and Daryl, which is the reason Rocha agreed to the whole thing because Rocha didn't want the children to be in any harm. So Rocha contacted a friend, Samuel Gonzalez, who introduced him to his cousin, Jose Luis Del Toro. Del Toro agreed to do the job in return for a monetary sum.

On November 7, 1997, Del Toro traveled to Sarasota, Florida in a car registered to his grandmother with the intention of assaulting Sheila. He stopped at a Sports Authority store to obtain camouflage clothes, and a gas station to get directions to the address Rocha gave him. On his way to Sheila's house, Del Toro was spotted by a suspicious neighbor who memorized his license plate. (This would later lead to his capture). Del Toro continued to the Sarasota home, where he broke in and saw Sheila with the quadruplets. In an interview with police before his conviction, he told them that he saw her with her children and saw how caring she was and almost didn't go through with it. He was about to leave but Sheila noticed the door was open and then noticed him. He stated, he couldn't run so he shot her in the face with a .45 Caliber gun and then slit her throat in full view of the quadruplets. She was 35 years old. Her body was found a few hours later by 13-year-old Stevie when she returned from school.

Tracie Andrews, The Road Rage Murderer : Crime Documentary

Tracie Marguerite Andrews (born in 1969) is an English woman who murdered her fiancé.

Andrews, a former model and barmaid, attacked Harvey in his car after they had stopped following an argument on the way to their flat in The Becks, Alvechurch, Worcester. Andrews stabbed Harvey more than 30 times.

Andrews appeared at a Press conference on 3 December 1996 saying Harvey had been the victim of a road rage attack from a man with "staring eyes." Andrews took a drug overdose the following day.

After a West Midlands Police inquiry failed to find witnesses to the incident, Andrews was arrested on the morning of Saturday 7 December, in Hospital. She was released on Bail after being charged.

She continued into the court still holding her road-rage defence, but was found guilty by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court in July 1997 for the murder of Lee Harvey on 1 December 1996. She was sentenced to life imprisonment and a 14-year minimum term was recommended, which would have kept her behind bars until at least 2011 and the age of 42.

A subsequent appeal lodged by Andrews, alleging that she was the victim of a miscarriage of justice because of damaging publicity surrounding her case, was thrown out at a hearing in October 1998.

During her imprisonment, Andrews has saved the life of a fellow prisoner who attempted suicide, and this sparked fears that she could be out on prison even sooner than the trial judge had recommended. But the Home Secretary (who has since been stripped of his powers to amend minimum terms) later ordered that Andrews should serve no less than the 14 years that had been recommended by her trial judge.

In April 1999 Andrews admitted that she had carried out the crime. As a result a 2005 ITV1 docu-drama resultantly gave an account of her relationship with Lee Harvey and her conviction of his murder, starring Sarah Manners as Andrews.

In 2006 it was reported that Andrews was hoping to be released from jail within months and planned to marry, ending a series of same sex affairs, but Home Office sources denied that she was due to be released imminently.

She was however moved from Foston Hall jail in Derbyshire to Send prison near Woking, Surrey. An inmate of the therapeutic wing, she receives one-to-one counselling, has admitted again to murdering Harvey.

However, a prison source was quoted as saying: "Andrews has moved to this prison and admitted to the murder, which has surprised a lot of people. Although she has accepted her guilt, nobody really believes that she feels much remorse. She sees this as her first step on the way to parole. Andrews is manipulative and devious. Officers believe she will say or do anything to get out of jail."

Since moving to the jail, Andrews has changed her name to Tia Carter, and also made friends with Jane Andrews, the former aide of Sarah Ferguson who was jailed seven years ago for the murder by knife attack of boyfriend Tom Cressman.

Harvey's parents, Roy and Maureen, travelled to 10 Downing Street as part of a delegation of families involved in high-profile murder cases. They have often spoken of their belief that Andrews will kill again if released.

Kenneth Allen McDuff, Broomstick Murderer : Serial Killer Documentary

Kenneth Allen McDuff (March 21, 1946 – November 17, 1998) was an American serial killer suspected of at least 14 murders. He had previously been on death row from 1968 to 1972.

McDuff was first convicted for raping and murdering three teenagers on August 6, 1966 — Robert Brand, Mark Dunman, and Edna Louis Sullivan — a crime that became popularly known as the Broomstick Murders. His partner, 17-year-old Roy Dale Green, was sentenced to four months house arrest and five years probation. Although McDuff was sentenced to death, the sentence was overturned when the U.S. Supreme Court abolished capital punishment in 1972. He served life with the possibility of parole.

Due to extremely crowded Texas prisons, McDuff was paroled in 1989. Upon release McDuff was arrested on a series of parole violations, but he was never locked up for any substantial length of time until he was arrested for the murder of a 22-year-old Texan woman, Melissa Ann Northrup, in 1992. He was implicated in at least three other murders. After being released, he got a job at a gas station making $4 an hour and took a class, at Texas State Technical College in Waco. One year after he left his job at a gas station and dropped out of TSTC, he began killing again.

As a wanted fugitive, he fled to Kansas City, but was eventually captured due to a tip from a profile on the television show America's Most Wanted. McDuff was eventually sent to death row and executed on November 17, 1998 at Huntsville Unit.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice death row section McDuff's final words were: "I’m ready to be released. Release me". McDuff's body was never claimed by his family. He is buried in the cemetery of the prison where he was executed. His grave marker is adorned only with his death row number: X999055.

Effect on the Texas penal system

After McDuff's second arrest for murder in 1992, Texas launched a massive overhaul of its prison system to prevent violent criminals from winning early parole. The tightened parole rules, extensive prison building projects and improved monitoring of violent parolees are collectively known in Texas as the McDuff Laws.

The Murder of Rosemarie Essa : Crime Documentary

A former Ohio doctor was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for poisoning his wife with cyanide five years ago.

A Cleveland jury convicted Yazeed Essa last week of aggravated murder for poisoning Rosemarie Essa, his wife and the mother of his two children, with a cyanide-laced calcium pill.

Essa, 41, will be eligible for parole in 20 years, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Bill Mason said. His crime occurred before Ohio sentencing laws were changed to give judges discretion in determining when a convicted murderer is eligible for parole.

Dressed in an orange jailhouse jumpsuit, Essa did not betray an emotion as Judge Deena Calabrese lamented that she could not hand down a stiffer sentence.

"I regret that you have the benefit of committing this crime under the old law," Calabrese told Essa.

"You took an oath to preserve life and you destroyed your family," she said. "I cannot imagine the evil that you have done to these people, especially your children. It is my great hope and the only that I can think of at this moment that they forget you ... and that whatever legacy you had is wiped away."

The six-week trial included testimony from more than 60 witnesses who told the story of a philandering doctor, his many mistresses and an international manhunt that crossed three continents and ended with his arrest in Cyprus in October 2006, 18 months after his wife's death.

"What do you say to a person that murders the mother of his children, a murdering coward with no heart, no compassion, no remorse?" Rosemarie Essa's mother, Virginia DiPuccio, said at her son-in-law's sentencing hearing Tuesday.

"All she wanted was children and a husband that loved her back and you took that away. She didn't deserve it," DiPuccio said as other relatives sat in the packed courtroom audience, dabbing tears with tissues.

Essa fled the United States in March 2005 after police questioned him about his wife's death. He was arrested in Cyprus on October 7, 2006, for using fake travel documents. In January 2009, Essa was extradited to Cuyahoga County, according to the prosecutor's office.

Defense attorneys pointed to a lack of physical evidence linking Essa to the tainted supplements and urged jurors not to convict him for his playboy lifestyle.

The defense also attempted to cast suspicion on Essa's mistresses. Two of them testified, one saying she never loved Essa and another saying she believed him when he promised to be her soul mate.

The 38-year-old mother of two and former nurse was driving to the movies in the family Volvo on February 24, 2005, when she felt ill, passed out and hit another vehicle before stopping against a curb.

Before she crashed, she called a friend from her car and told her that she was beginning to feel sick to her stomach and wondered whether a supplement her husband had given her was making her ill.

Jurors heard from the friend, Eva Gardner, along with two of Essa's mistresses and his brother, who said Essa admitted to killing his wife.

DiPuccio said her daughter made the phone call so he wouldn't get away with murder.

"It didn't go your way," she said, as a stone-faced Essa listened. "She got you, Yaz, and the Essa curse ends here today. We have Rosie in our memory. She's in our hearts and with us always."

The Murder of Robert Wiles : Crime Documentary

February 1, 2012 - On Tuesday, Stobert Lindell Holt was convicted of manslaughter by a Polk County Florida jury after being initially charged with first-degree murder of Robert Arthur Wiles the son of Wiles' family's aviation maintenance business.

Back on April 1, 2008, Wiles disappeared from his fathers business, National Flight Services, an aircraft maintenance company located at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Florida. Wiles, age 26 at the time, was employed with the company as a business development manager and aircraft pilot.

Two days after Wiles disappearance, the family received a ransom text note requesting $750,000 for his son's safe return. The family attempted to drop of the ransom money but no one picked it up the money and Wiles was never heard from again.

However, no further demands were ever made on the ransom and his body was never found. Wiles? car was located at the family business, and he had missed a flight from Orlando to Dallas scheduled the day after his disappearance. Holt was a former employee as operations manager with National Flight Services at the time.

Although Wiles body was never found the FBI investigation revealed Wiles was killed and they believe Holt was involved. The FBI analyzed cell phone records and to their discovery after Wiles? went missing his cell phone was used to send to emails and then send a text message to his father which lead authorities to Holt. Holt was arrested in December 2009.

Thomas and Pamela Wiles said they had hoped their son was alive. The family offered a $250,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the case.
