The Strangest Medical Conditions
Info: The human body is surprisingly wonderful in its capacity to unleash fright when we least expect it. Today, we present to you 12 of the strangest medical conditions, just to give the hypochondriac in you something to obsess over.
#7 Diprosopus
Diprosopus is Greek for ‘two- faced’. This extremely rare congenital disorder known as craniofacial duplication often occurs in combination with other genetic disorders. Most human babies with diprosopus are stillborn. A baby girl named Lali was lucky enough to survive. She was born with two ears, two noses and two pairs of lips and eyes. Her proud parents said that their little girl was simply a gift from God.
#6 Alien Hand Syndrome
Alien Hand Syndrome is a strange neurological disorder in which a person has full sensation in their limb, but they are not able to control its movement. After her epilepsy- related surgery, Karen Byrne from New Jersey started experiencing bizarre things. Her left hand started acting on its own like it was controlled by some ‘alien intelligence’. She claimed that the left hand would slap her suddenly, start unbuttoning her shirt or simply put down her cigarette. Researchers found that in Karen’s case the left and right hemisphere of the brain are capable of its own independent will and the right side of her brain simply refused to be dominated by the left.
#5 Kleine–Levin syndrome
Among the thousands of disorders and diseases, this one will definitely leave you dumbstruck. Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) is referred to in the popular media as The Sleeping Beauty Syndrome. This obscure neurological disorder strikes teenagers primarily and it’s characterized with excessive amounts of sleep. In between episodes, patients with KLS appear to be in good health with no behavioral dysfunction, leading a normal life. However, when episodes of KLS happen they become bedridden, lethargic, confused and unable to take care of themselves. In some cases, hypersexuality, apathy, and abnormal food cravings are exhibited. These episodes can last for weeks and even months and reappear with absolutely no warning.
#4 Congenital Insensitivity to Pain
Congenital insensitivity to pain is a rare and bizarre medical condition, caused by a mutation in the gene that controls pain- sensing neurons. Patients with this condition experience absolutely no physical pain. They cannot feel the difference between hot and cold and sharp and dull. You may think they are superheroes who can have a smiley face while walking on fire, but the truth is there is a purpose and reason behind the pain. It’s the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. After all, you don’t want to walk a whole week with a broken leg or multiple wounds and tongue burns.
#3 Water Allergy
If you think having a peanut or pollen allergy makes you special and powerless, you are wrong! Alexandra Allen, a 17-year-old girl from Utah, is one of the few people diagnosed with Aquagenic urticaria, rare and incurable medical condition. Swimming in pools, getting wet from the rain or a simple shower can trigger painful and itchy, red hives. And, crying about it will literally make it worse. Thankfully, drinking water is fine and does not cause a reaction.
#2 Cotard’s Delusion
We all have bad days when you just want to go under the blanket and pretend you don’t exist anymore. Very few people took this to a whole new level. The Walking corpse syndrome or Cotard’s Delusion is a rare mental disorder where patients suffer the illusion that they don’t exist anymore. It was first reported in the 1700s yet the underlying cause remains still a mystery. Neurologist Jules Cotard reported an unusual case involving a certain Mademoiselle X who claimed to have no internal organs and believed to be immortal. She died of starvation, because who needs food when you are immortal, and eventually, the case became so popular they named the disorder after him.
#1 Auto-brewery syndrome
Jesus turned water into wine! What if we tell you there is a man in Texas who can turn bread into beer? For some people, it may sound like a dream come true, I mean think of all the money you are going to save on alcohol. This rare phenomenon is called gut fermentation syndrome, in which intoxicating quantities of ethanol are produced through fermentation with the help of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a type of yeast that can live in the intestinal tract. You eat a bunch of starch, the yeast starts acting like a brewery and you get drunk. Easy Peasy! Sadly, dizziness, hangovers, and dry mouth come with....
